Down time at one of the bases while the cheerleaders were doing their thing. It was a good opportunity to take a nap. Armstrong is on the right and Wells (one of our new pilots) is on the left.

As a person who will forever be at least a century behind culturally, I have to ask what do cheerleaders DO when they travel to entertain? Cheers? And are these women like, famous? (The insertion of the word "like" shows you that, even though behind, I am not hopeless (: Do people just look at them? Thanks for your help in these cultural matters. (:

I'm not sure I am much farther ahead of you culturally but I can give you a little insight in this matter. At the bigger bases they will do a show. It is a combination of dance routines (along the same lines as the ones you helped create at Long Creek)and interactive skits with the crowd. At the smaller bases they just do a meet and greet session where they sign autographs and pose for pictures with the guys. Pretty much the same thing you get with other celebrities who pass through here. They don't have the time to actually talk with people beyond an initial greeting - which is maybe just as well. I imagine that with a lot of them, once you get below the surface there isn't much we have in common (and the surface being the fact we are both in Iraq at the same time). Like I said before, part of the appeal is just seeing someone who isn't connected to the military - as a reminder the rest of the world is still ticking along.
