This is what used to be a resort town for wealthy Iraqis wanting to vacation on the lake. A lot of the big buildings are still there and you can see the parks and landscaping they did but it is pretty much abandoned now.

Found an encouraging Monitor article the other day. A picture of a public park in Baghdad...trees...a working fountain, play equiptment for children, children playing, bike paths and people using them. I forget what a HUGE city Baghdad is...and how devistation in one area may not be reflective of city-wide conditions. I was reminded of this looking at this picture of a resort that, hopefully, would be used again.

I think we always assume countries at war are totally destroyed because those are the only pictures we see. Most of the areas we fly over show no signs of war. It is only around the military bases that you see destroyed equipment and buildings. With notable exceptions like areas of Fallujah.
