This picture was taken on a lake north of us. I was intrigued by the one remaining hill in an otherwise flat area. It must have had some good cap rock on it.

Great photo~ I assume the lks are manmade? Forpower or irrigation or both? Seems like with such flat land and the water the area should be a garden spot instead of desert.

You are correct. All the lakes out here are man made. There may have been small lakes to start with but they have been significantly increased by dams. Some are made by diverting part of the Euphrates (like the one next to us). As far as I can tell the ones north of us are just for power production - there isn't any agriculture around them. They may also serve to keep the river level up during the summer months. It is interesting there is nothing green along the shores but that may be because the levels fluctuate so much. The shorelines move hundreds of yards during the year.
