This is one of the famous MRAP vehicles (the long version). We see them all over out here but this is my first picture of one.

I am guessing...are these the bomb deflecting vehicles that are VERY heavy (and expensive?) Something about the extra armor that was a disadvantage? I am really clueless. Help!

These are the bomb deflecting vehicles that are very heavy, expensive, (about 1/2 to 1 million, depending on the model) and not very stable off road. The upside is that they have saved a lot of lives already but it is a step back from the lighter, faster military that was the goal of the transformation started a few years ago. It's kind of a bummer when reality imposes on all your great plans :)

Impressive, but still got to not be the best part of your day when a bomb goes off under or next to you!!
