This is a series of pictures of what we do on slow afternoons in the maintenance world. You might think Friend is hard at work but he is actually trying to kill the computer's tank before it kills his (which when I tried it it was actually a lot like work).

David,
It looks like there is a thin layer of dust on that computer and on the desk. Is that right? It makes me think there is always a thin layer of dust on everything there. If so, does it seem that the electronics there have a shorter life than over here?

Russ,
You are exactly right about the dust. We wipe things down on a regular basis but after awhile you just accept it. Canned air is a precious commodity around here especially since we can't buy it at the PX anymore since too many people were using it to get high (like there isn't enough problems over here) so they no longer stock it. The dust definitely does a number on the electronics (and the heat). The good thing is all the computers over here belong to the Marines and they do a good job of replacing ones that break.

Canned air? Certainly you are kidding? But obviously not. (: What on earth is canned air and what is its legitimate (and un-legitimate too, since I have your attention (: function?

Canned air is sold under a lot of different titles (dust remover, dust cleaner, computer air, ect). It is basically air in an aerosol can that is under pressure so you can use it to clean dust out of hard to reach places. It is very handy for electronics and you can buy it in just about any general store (Safeway, Fred Meyers) in addition to electronic stores. The problem is that you can concentrate the fumes (in a bag or container) and inhale them. You can do this with any aerosol can and the effect is the same as anything else you do to shut off oxygen to your brain - it gives you that drunk feeling. The problem is there are some pretty nasty chemicals in aerosol cans that are much worse than alcohol. So now you know :)
